Associate Scientist – Soybean Nursery Manager – Kekaha or Kunia, HI – 990 Role Purpose – Leading soybean product development nursery activities in Hawaii. Accountabilities – Ensure the coordination and joint accountability for all associated nursery activities such as planting, sampling, pollinations, and harvest. • Manage the technical staff dedicated to soybean research support on Oahu and Kauai. o Train and develop direct reports as well as assist in the training of other station personnel as appropriate. o Responsible for workforce planning and succession planning for soybean Hawaii personnel. • Develop budgets and manage expenditures for soybean development activities in Hawaii. • Communicate and coordinate soybean Hawaii nursery activities with mainland soybean development and traits groups, through the winter nursery coordination group. • Full compliance with and ownership of Trait Stewardship guidelines. o Operate within and enforce Syngenta stewardship policies and processes. o Fully understand and adhere to SQC gateways. o Develop or oversee the development of Site Work Instructions and protocols pertaining to trait conversion function. • Encourage safety awareness and fully support station safety objectives. Knowledge, experience & capabilities – Critical knowledge: M.S. degree in a scientific discipline or a BS with the equivalent of at least three years of experience in a related field. • A thorough knowledge of soybean agronomy, genetics, and field nursery procedures • Basic management skills. • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of plant breeding. Critical experience: Preference will be given to candidate with some or all of the following: • Experience in soybean nursery activities, or in breeding nursery procedures of other crops. • Experience in working with regulated traits in field environments • Experience in continuous nursery. Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities: Ability to work in a team and to communicate with individuals in the company. • Ability and motivation to learn new technologies and concepts. • Ability to provide day to day direction to employees. • Ability to use personal computer, standard office software, and complex nursery management software Syngenta offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including market-based pay, health/dental insurance, a generous 401(k) program, paid time off, tuition reimbursement and relocation assistance.
