Research Technician – Tropical Nursery, Kunia, HI 1019

Role Purpose –

The purpose of the Tropical Research Associate role is to support the soybean nursery, generation advance, MAB activity and trait introgression projects and to ensure they are completed accurately, timely and in the most cost effective manner. This is measured by nurseries accomplishing their timelines, reliability of seed multiplication, precision of MAS sampling, planting/harvesting accuracy, nursery maintenance and budget efficiency.

Accountabilities –

1. Personnel Management of site support staff
• Foster a team environment while working departments at the research station
• Ensure company and department goals and policy including safety are part of projects activities
2. Oversee project activities to assure that program plans, protocol and timelines are met for:
• Crossing Block and Lighted Nurseries
• Generation advance
• Marker Assisted Breeding and Sampling
• Single Plant Selection
• Increases
• Regulated Trait development
• Packaging and laying out seed returning to mainland
3. Align resources and work plans in cooperation with other functions
4. Manage Budgets in coordination with local station manager and mainland PD coordinator
5. Aid in the development of the Tropical SPD plan and activities
• Recommending and scheduling SPD staff members trips to local site
6. Maintain machinery, tools and other support equipment
• Plan, evaluate and implement where appropriate new field operation tools and methodology to maintain an environment of continuous improvement.
• Work with soybean (and other crop) scientists on site to get regular feedback on plot quality and efficiency in support of breeding goals.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

Critical knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of the soybean breeding and nursery management practices and requirements. General understanding of field and plot machinery utilization.
• Good understanding of cultural practices (weed control, soil fertility practices, etc.).

Critical experience

• B.S. in agriculture or equivalent experience in agricultural research preferred.
• The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Strong computer skills are helpful.
• The ability to function effectively as a team member and to perform detailed work is necessary.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

• Knowledge of farm operations desirable.
• Ability to maintain/obtain CDL certification if necessary and a Commercial Applicator’s License.
• The ideal candidate will also be flexible, adaptable and safety-oriented.
