Research Associate – Kunia, HI – 1075 Role Purpose In a highly team-oriented environment the Tropical Agronomy Research Associate IPM will support all agronomic team inputs into the Corn and Soybean nurseries, corn isos and Parent Seed to ensure they are executed safely, accurately, timely, in the most cost effective manner and according to all Syngenta Stewardship policies and protocols. This is measured by nurseries and isos accomplishing their timelines, reliability of seed increases and crosses, precision of MAS sampling, planting/harvesting accuracy, nursery maintenance and budget efficiency. Accountabilities Keeping Syngenta’s best in class Safety and Stewardship principles, practices and protocols in mind • Preparing and application of herbicide for weed control • Develop, Review and Execute protocols developed by Agronomy Management staff • Preparing and application of fungicides and insecticides with IPM spray adjutant • Ensure timely spray applications based on IPM scouting • Ensure Irrigation and fertigation are done within the spray program framework. • Develop dedicated spray rows to reduce crop damage during spraying. • Oversee the development of nursery blocks Section 6 lands • Ensure quality of all projects • Enable/execute proper QC/QA per protocol • Contribute to protocol refinement • Computer ability should include using spreadsheets and outlook email • Weekly updates and written progress reports, timelines and needs communicated as requested by managers • Understanding and using ARC-GIS field maps and to use these to make spraying timelines • Work closely with colleagues in Agronomy and be able to effectively communicate with project managers on site and at Kunia. • Effectively manage small teams of people to execute on the various field activities this job entails • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with all Hawaii staff • Ensure that the Hawaii staff (in particular the Agronomy Manager and Station Manager are kept informed regarding all accelerated project progress and issues. • Develop fail safe spray systems to ensure that no erroneous sprays are delivered to the wrong field. Knowledge, experience & capabilities Critical knowledge Thorough knowledge of pesticides for Corn and Soybean nursery management practices and requirements. • General understanding of Agricultural equipment machinery. • Good understanding of cultural practices (weed control, insect and disease practices, etc.). • Knowledge of and ability to use computer hardware and software for Agronomic planning and to development analytical process for capturing data relevant to growing the crop. • Exposure to new computer-based technologies • Knowledge of the seed industry in Hawaii Critical experience B.S. in agriculture or equivalent experience in agricultural research preferred. • Knowledge of farm operations desirable. • The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. • Strong computer skills are necessary. • The ability to function effectively as a team member and to perform detailed work is necessary. • The ideal candidate will also be flexible, adaptable and safety oriented. • May be required to occasionally travel to the mainland and Kauai. • Must be able to obtain HDOA pesticide applicators license.
